WONDERLAB and AB-Biotics Announce Strategic Partnership and Global Launch of the Targeted Microbiome Management Approach
2025-05-26
On May 20 local time in Europe, Vitafoods Europe 2025, one of the most influential events in Europe and the global nutrition, dietary-supplement, and health-food industries, officially opened in Barcelona, Spain, bringing together health-science companies from around the world. WONDERLAB, a leading Chinese probiotic company, and AB-BIOTICS, a leading European biotechnology company, jointly announced a strategic partnership and launched the Targeted Microbiome Management Approach as a global solution. The partnership brings together research strengths from China and Europe to advance the international development of the probiotic industry.

Chinese and Spanish Probiotic Leaders Join Forces to Focus on Targeted Gut-Microbiome Intervention Technology
Vitafoods Europe in Barcelona has been held 27 times to date. It is an annual platform for companies in the global health and wellness sector to showcase their research capabilities, as well as an important stage for outstanding Chinese biotechnology companies to demonstrate their international strength.
WONDERLAB has consistently driven its development through research and maintained strict, internationally aligned standards for product quality. It has topped major Chinese probiotic platform rankings for several consecutive years. AB-BIOTICS, the Spanish biotechnology company with which WONDERLAB has now announced a partnership, is home to one of Europe’s largest private strain libraries and has focused deeply on probiotics since its founding, supported by strong research capabilities.
According to WONDERLAB, the strategic partnership was established on the basis of both companies’ in-depth research into targeted microbiome approaches for weight management and their shared health and R&D philosophy. The two companies will carry out research cooperation going forward.

WONDERLAB first proposed the Targeted Microbiome Management Approach in March 2025. At the Exhibition, Liu Yanchen, Brand Director of WONDERLAB, shared the scientific rationale behind the approach. Addressing three major pain points of conventional weight management—single-target intervention, treating symptoms rather than underlying causes, and poor adherence—the approach uses a three-dimensional “microbiome–metabolism–appetite” regulatory mechanism to build a dynamic model that balances energy intake and expenditure, with the aim of making weight management more fundamental, fully targeted, and easier to sustain.
Miquel Àngel Bonachera Sierra, CEO and Co-Founder of AB-BIOTICS, said in an interview: “The Targeted Microbiome Management Approach is transformative for the development of the probiotic industry. By combining AB-BIOTICS’ strengths and future potential in strain research with WONDERLAB’s R&D and industrial capabilities, market insight, and end-to-end value-chain strengths, the partnership establishes a China–Europe industrialization model integrating research and industry. It offers a cross-regional China–Europe solution to obesity, a global issue.”

Under the strategic partnership framework, the two companies will pursue in-depth cooperation in weight management and jointly develop their shared strain library. Backed by China’s end-to-end value chain for commercialization, they will integrate the R&D capabilities, market experience, and international resources of WONDERLAB and AB-BIOTICS, promote the Targeted Microbiome Management Approach in international markets, and advance its application and adoption worldwide.
China–Europe Collaboration Opens a New Direction for International Weight-Management Research
WONDERLAB and AB-BIOTICS had already launched a joint R&D laboratory project. The two companies regularly share research results and jointly conduct strain-development research.
AB-LIFE®, a flagship strain from AB-BIOTICS, is designed to act on the gut microbiome and provide scientific support for metabolic health. Based on this strain and WONDERLAB’s independently developed Lactobacillus acidophilus GOLDGUT-LA100, the two companies jointly developed SHAPE100™ Probiotics (hereinafter “S100 Probiotics”), which officially launched in January 2024. In the year since its launch, the product has risen to the top tier of major e-commerce rankings, remained a leading product through the 618 shopping festival, and received multiple honors, including a Forbes China 2025 Consumer Impact Product award. It has been recognized by consumers and professionals alike.

Notably, at this year’s Vitafoods Europe, the AB-LIFE® strain used in WONDERLAB’s S100 Probiotics won the “Ingredient of the Year” award in its relevant category at the 2025 NutraIngredients Awards. The product experience area set up at the venue attracted many international visitors who stopped to ask questions and try the products. It quickly became one of the most popular attractions, drawing exhibitors and visitors from China and abroad to learn about and sample the products.

Looking ahead, Miquel Àngel Bonachera Sierra, CEO and Co-Founder of AB-BIOTICS, said: “Our cooperation will establish a China–Europe industrialization model integrating research and industry, offer a cross-regional China–Europe cooperation solution to the global issue of obesity, and open new possibilities for targeted microbiome management technology in global obesity prevention and management. This is not only a demonstration of the innovation and global development capabilities of Chinese biotechnology companies represented by WONDERLAB, but also strong evidence of win-win cooperation and research breakthroughs among Chinese and European research companies in the microbiome field.”
